Finding a job after completing graduation in the Merchant Navy field is a daunting task if you don’t have any association or sponsorship from the shipping company. It is acceptable that current passed out deck cadet will find it hard to manage the massive load of documentation and paperwork required after course completion.
When deck cadets seek work opportunity they usually tend to forget about receiving the important documents. It is for that reason vital for them to pay attention to this matter and keep all paperwork ready so that they can show to the employer whenever they are asked about them. The best way to ensure that you have all the documents available is to keep all documents handy in a file folder before applying for a job. Here are some of the important documents that they are usually asked to produce when seeking employment:
CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate)
This is the most important document for a sailor. It certifies that the individual holding this is a seafarer according to The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Mariners (STCW), 1978, as amended 1995. It is imperative to mention the CDC number when you are applying for a job with Indian and foreign shipping company.
STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) Certificates
This is another important certificate which is required by seafarers. This certificate was encouraged to promote safety and security of mariners, to protect property at sea and to protect the marine environment. The course includes personal survival techniques, personal safety and social responsibility, elementary first aid, fire prevention, and firefighting. All these courses are mandated for seafaring professionals.
This is the proof of identity for sailors along with CDC. Every seagoing professional is advised to keep passport ready when they are engaged in documentation work. Deck Cadets must have a passport handy with them if they want to secure a successful career at sea.
A diploma/degree certificate is required to apply for a job with the shipping company along with 10th and 12th mark sheet. These documents are required by the employer from the deck cadets to ensure that they have the knowledge and skills to manage the work on a ship
It is always vital for deck cadets to carry some extra photocopies atleast 10 and keep it in a folder whenever going for an interview.
